Eric Clapton – Happy Xmas

Happy Xmas was released in October of 2018 and marked Eric Clapton’s 21st solo studio album. The record features 14 tracks, and we’re counting down the top four. Clapton was initially reluctant to make a Christmas album, but his wife encouraged him to take it on—and the result feels honest and deeply personal. The album is filled with classic Clapton Blues riffs and soulful singing, staying true to his roots throughout. Clapton remains comfortably within his own musical voice, letting the songs breathe naturally. He proves once again why he is a true Blues master and songwriting genius.
4) White Christmas
Eric Clapton’s “White Christmas” opens with a classic Blues turnaround in the key of E, immediately setting a soulful tone. His vocal delivery is warm and expressive, while the Bluesy riffs and chord work put a fresh, uplifting spin on the timeless classic. The result feels joyful and relaxed rather than sad. The music video adds another layer, depicting Clapton as a child dreaming of becoming a great musician and longing for his first electric guitar. The track also features a signature Clapton guitar solo, complemented by tasteful string arrangements that give the song added depth.
3) Xmas Tears
This is a cover of Freddie King’s “Christmas Tears,” a slow Blues in the key of C. Clapton really unleashes on this track, stretching out on guitar and injecting extra energy into the vocal performance. The line “I hear sleigh bells ring, but I haven’t heard a word from you in years” perfectly captures the song’s bittersweet Blues heartbreak. There’s plenty of space throughout for him to dig in and let the song breathe, and around the three-minute mark he truly cuts loose on the guitar. Freddie King would have been proud of this version.
2) Merry Little Xmas
Eric Clapton’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” opens with soulful guitar licks and a Bluesy turnaround accented by tasteful piano changes. Vocally, this is the most intimate track on the entire album, with Clapton delivering a warm, restrained performance that feels deeply personal. He taps into the Christmas Spirit here, letting emotion lead rather than flash. The understated guitar fills between vocal phrases are pure genius, and the slow tempo perfectly suits his laid-back, expressive style.
1) Home For The Holidays
“Home for the Holidays” is an original Christmas song by Eric Clapton and stands as one of the most powerful tracks on the album. Melodically, it immediately pulls the listener in. Built on simple chord strums, the song places all its weight on the melody, vocals, and heartfelt lyrics. The chorus features tasteful harmonies, with subtle electric guitar lines that lift the song without overpowering it—reserved and understated in true Clapton fashion. This track is a clear winner.
